Job/Internship Description

The City of Takoma Park is currently hiring a Sustainability Intern. The candidate will gain experience in sustainability planning, greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategies, outreach, social marketing, community engagement, energy efficiency projects, climate risk assessment, program design, local government, and other sustainability initiatives. The incumbent will report directly to the City's Sustainability Manager, with the opportunity to collaborate withstaff throughout all City departments.

The anticpated start date for this position would be on July 1, 2024.A first review of resumes is expected to begin on June 3, 2024.

Typical Duties include:

  • Serving as the main point of contact for several major projects including residential and commercial clean energy programs, including the Multifamily Building Improvement Grant program, LMI solar and weatherization program, and others;
  • Co-creation of an information outreach campaign for Electric Vehicles (EVs) including promotion of incentives, and conducting in-person outreach to diverse socio-economic audiences;
  • Collaboration in drafting City policies related to EV charging, fleet electrification, and green purchasing policy;
  • Attending regional committee meetings, networking with regional and national partners, and impacting the direction of City environmental programs;
  • Presenting information to both small and large audiences from diverse socio-economic backgrounds; Creating, revising and maintaining documents and reports using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), Canva or Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Google Docs;
  • Co-organization and outreach participation in major community events; such as Go Solar, TkPk! Solar information night, Healthy Homes Fair, City Earth Day Celebration, and Takoma Park Street Festival;
  • Using social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and creative marketing tools (Mailchimp, Buffer) to manage the office's communication and monthly Sustainability E-newsletter to create articles and/or distribute information;
  • All other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to be successful are:

  • Knowledge of and interest in environmental sustainability related topics, technologies, and subjects including but not limited to energy efficiency, climate resiliency and mitigation planning, and renewable energy;
  • The ability to multitask and use project management tools to aid in organization;
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision in order to meet project deliverables.

Minimum Qualifications include:

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree in a related field, or enrollment in a related program;
  • Knowledge gained from some experience related to sustainability related projects or programs;
  • Any combination of education and experience that would allow incumbent to understand the subject matter and duties.

Preferred qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program related to sustainability, energy efficiency, public policy, marketing or communications;
  • Experience with community outreach and social media;
  • Proficient with MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Technical skills in ArcGIS would be valued;
  • Bilingual applicant encouraged.

The hourly wage for this position is expected to be between $16.00 and $18.00 per hour, and will be offered at a level consistent with the skills and abilities of the candidate. The maximum length of the internship is one year, and the incumbent is expected to work between 20 - 40 hours per week. Work hours are generally during the normal work-week, but there is some flexibility. Occasional weekend and evening work will be required for special events.
