Symetra has an exciting new opportunity to join our team as an LTD Claim Consultant!

About the role

In this role, you will work in the LTD Claims department handling claims for professionals (i.e. attorneys, physicians), high wage earners, and those of complex nature. You will proactively and autonomously partner with available resources to assist in making initial and ongoing decisions and action plans, as well as support case managers and senior case managers in claim adjudication.You will also act as a technical claim resource/leader/expert for the LTD department.

What you will do

  • Orchestrate the implementation of complex claims that require sequencing for multiple actions and involve multiple parties.
  • Manage a caseload of pending and ongoing files that may require a very in-depth knowledge of the contract document and detailed understanding of risk management.
  • Adjudicate claims that often have attorney representation.
  • Remain fully compliant with all appropriate state and federal guidelines and regulations.
  • Make timely decisions and communicate them thoroughly to appropriate parties in writing and verbally.
  • Use appropriate resources for claim management, balancing risk management with expense management.
  • Work closely with legal department. Use vendors in areas of investigation, financial consulting, medical reviews, and social security advocacy. Conduct field visits on behalf of the company or using an approved vendor to do so.
  • Train case managers on field visits, acquiring CPT codes/ RVU reports, billable hours, commission statements, and other professional productivity reports for analysis in determining pre-disability occupation and opportunity for return to work. Provide mentoring on claim settlement discussions.
  • Identify files within case manager caseloads to take ownership of by reviewing reports and receiving manager/team lead feedback. Collaborate with case managers on the reassignment of those files and provide coaching where appropriate.
  • Foster a professional culture, act as a leader and encourage collaboration and change management. Promote advances/changes in industry standards to case managers.
  • Identify trends within the team for training opportunities and work with team leads to provide technical guidance through the delivery of training.
  • Provide management with insight into causes and solutions for trends in case management.
  • Develop reporting to identify possible claims following identified trends for opportunity.
  • Provide customer service and strengthen relationships with brokers, policyholders, and employees. Proactively connect with these parties in anticipation of potential difficult situations.
  • Liaise with account management/sales support to address opportunities for collaboration between sales and claims.
  • Seek out opportunities for continuous process improvement and possible efficiency gains.

Compensation

Salary Range: $62,300 - $103,800plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Your experience and skills

  • College degree or equivalent business experience required.
  • 6+ years of experience in LTD or IDI claims required.
  • Knowledge of federal and state guidelines and regulations, including ERISA; general knowledge of disability contracts.
  • Experience acting as a formal mentor in LTD claims preferred.
  • Experience assessing physician or attorney disability claims is a plus.
  • Experience conducting field visits/negotiating settlements is preferred.
  • Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Great at multi-tasking and thinking critically.
  • High attention to detail and strong deadline management.
  • Financial and mathematical knowledge, i.e., must be able to read and interpret financial documents such as profit and loss, tax returns. Able to perform complex calculations of proportionate loss of incomes, in accordance with contracts.
  • Comfortable at independent decision making.
  • Proficiency with the MS Office Suite and expert use of Excel
  • Adept at reading and interpreting internal reporting, business results and departmental impact.
  • Receptive to feedback and able to adapt as needed.
  • Comfortable speaking publicly to peers and/or sitting on panels for industry meetings.
  • Good at networking and maintaining relationships.
