Special Note
This is an overtime eligible position in Student Wellness Services on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College. This is a cyclic position scheduled to work full-time September through June and half-time July and August each year. This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules.
Position Purpose
Provide mental health triage, consultation, counseling, assessment, referral, and brief, solution-focused therapy for a diverse population of students. Provide support and direction for a variety of Student Wellness Services initiatives related to holistic development and well-being, including self-care and self-management of conditions commonly affecting college students, such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Facilitate groups and workshops directed to help students elevate and maintain a practice of well-being, including use of techniques, such as mindfulness and Eco Therapy, how to avoid negative consequences associated with alcohol and other drug use, or other dysfunctional/destructive coping mechanisms. The incumbent participates in the selection, training, and supervision of student counseling interns.
Nature and Scope
This position is a member of an interdisciplinary team of medical and counseling professionals and reports directly to the Director for Student Wellness, Recreation, & Athleticsand consults with the Consultant Psychologist regularly at team meetings. The incumbent also works collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff, as well as the off-campus community to support a diverse student population in the context of pursuing higher education and degree attainment.
Essential Functions
  • Facilitate successful learning and development of students through the provision of mental health support in the form of psychoeducational groups and workshops, evaluation, assessment, and referral for a range of mental health conditions and, where appropriate, individual and group counseling.
  • Develop and deliver campus-wide education and prevention programs with the specific aim of reducing negative consequences associated with depression, anxiety, and alcohol and drug use, particularly among first year students, students in the residence halls, and student athletes.
  • Participate in developing and promoting a variety of Student Wellness Services initiatives designed to positively impact the health, retention, and success of students.
  • Employ a range of strategies to facilitate access to Student Wellness Services to address the diverse needs of various identity groups on campus; strategies designed to reduce barriers and increase access to care, including outreach, or satellite work, offering services in non-traditional settings (i.e., outside the center).
  • Work closely with other parts of the college, such as Residential and Dining Services, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Academic and Career Advising, Recreation & Athletics, BIPOC & LGBTQ+ Intersectional Support Services, Access Services for Students with Disabilities, New Student Programs, Veterans Center, and other student support offices to assist students in overall growth and development.
  • Serve as part of after hours on-call response team as needed in the event of campus emergencies, or high-level crisis.
  • Provide effective networking, collaboration, and consultation on student health and safety issues, including substance use/abuse issues by giving workshops, leading discussions, and providing information to staff offices, student organizations, academic programs, and others as requested.
  • Assist in the selection, training, and on-going supervision of student counseling interns.
  • Participate in College governance through committees as appropriate.
  • Provide support to Academic programs through collaboration and consultation with faculty, Deans, and the Learning and Teaching Commons.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of professional relationships and resources in the off-campus community; maintain a current referral file.
Additional Duties
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Experience working with adolescents and young adults, especially in a college setting.
  • Ability to effectively work with students who have psychological disorders and to respond to crisis and high-risk situations related to students.
  • Ability to recognize psychopathology and provide appropriate counseling or referral for a wide range of problems.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with local community resources and support networks.
  • Sufficient knowledge of psychiatric medications to provide effective therapy and know when to refer clients who may be on such medications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of professional and student staff.
  • Group facilitation skills.
  • Cultural awareness and understanding of diverse experiences and ability to work effectively with students and staff who are diverse in areas such as race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, genetic information, disability, or veteran status; knowledge of how these aspects of students' life experiences may be relevant to crisis situations.
  • Skills to listen, communicate, and write effectively about sensitive subjects, including interviewing skills to elicit and synthesize information and to effectively confront difficult situations and individuals.
  • Ability to create, organize, and maintain confidential records and information; ability to clearly explain and act in accordance with the terms of HIPAA and FERPA regulations for protection of student records.
  • Ability to use brief, solution-focused therapy.
  • Knowledge of and experience with a wide range of therapeutic modalities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MA/MS in Clinical Psychology or MSW, Clinical Psychology, or related field.
  • Possess a Washington state LICSW, LMHT, and/or LMFT license, or be eligible to obtain such license within two years from date of hire.
  • Two years full-time recent clinical experience.
  • A commitment to equity, inclusion, and an appreciation for a liberal arts education.
Desired Qualifications
  • Full licensure in the state of Washington.
  • Recent experience with diverse college student populations.
  • Three years full-time recent clinical experience.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Must be available for occasional evening and/or weekend work.
  • Must possess and maintain a Washington state LICSW, LMHT, and/or LMFT license, or obtain such license within two years from date of hire.
