Job Summary

The Parks and Community Services (PCS) High School Intern position is designed to provide Kirkland youth with education, job skills, and career development training in the field of PCS.

This is a summer position that will focus on recreation, administration and human services. The internship program facilitates youth development through on-the-job work experience and career development training to instill strong self-esteem, good work habits, and connection to the community.

Interns will spend their time assisting with outdoor programs, hiking, leading games, conducting research, and completing training and education workshops with fellow interns.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist staff in leading activities for the teen outdoor recreation program and the mobile recreation program during the summer
  • Assist staff in keeping youth participants safe during outdoor activities
  • Assist staff in preparing materials and equipment for outdoor activities
  • Participate in weekly training and development activities.
  • Assist with taking photos for social media/marketing
  • May assist with special events such as sprinkler park or outreach events

  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload, with assistance from PCS staff (something to acknowledge different places/tasks each day - organized/show up on time, etc.)
  • Familiarity with standard computer software, e.g. Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to work collaboratively to meet program goals.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be between 14 and 18 years of age on start date.
  • Must be a student enrolled in an educational program.
  • Must be able to work as a team member to accomplish a common goal.
  • Must be able to push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal history background check.

Working Conditions
Assignments may involve field work, which includes uneven terrains and sometimes adverse weather conditions, and desk work, which may be interrupted with phone calls and running errands. Desk work is done at a computer terminal. Let's add ability to walk for # of hours, or # of miles. Or ability to accompany participants on hikes, activities, in the water, outside in general.

Employment Hours
Interns will generally work 10-20 hours per week, with the potential for more hours, not exceed 40 hours per week. It is estimated that work hours will be divided proportionally between four general project areas:

  • Outdoor recreation trips (i.e. hikes, yoga, river floating) - 30%
  • Mobile recreation activities - 30%
  • Research and education - 30%
  • Other projects such as special events, sprinkler park, etc. - 10%
